Centre for Cognition & Decision Making invites you to the seminar«Effects of stimulus orientation on assessment of motor cortex plasticity using TMS»
«Effects of stimulus orientation on assessment of motor cortex plasticity using TMS»
by
Sergei Tugin
Ph.D. student, Dept. of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering (NBE),
Aalto University, School of Science, Finland
The role of electric field orientation in TMS measurements have not been widely studied. However, stimuli orientation is one of the key features of any experiment, which importance is comparable to that of correct determination of hotspot location or motor threshold. Sergei is working in Risto Ilmoniemi’s lab at Aalto University, where a novel multi-locus TMS (mTMS) transducer was developed. mTMS allows to electronically change the orientation of the electric field, which presents new opportunities for studying brain plasticity and sensitivity. New technique simplifies the process of studying the cortex excitability, makes diagnostic faster and easier and allows to develop more accurate treatment protocols. During the lecture, Sergei is going to talk about traditional and modern methods of TMS stimulation for single and paired-pulse protocols. Emphasis will be placed on the role of TMS pulse orientation in generation of short-interval intra-cortical inhibition and facilitation (SICI and SICF).
